Tour du Rwanda 2026 Route Unveiled
The official route for the 2026 Tour du Rwanda has been revealed, featuring challenging mountain stages through Rwanda's iconic highlands.
The 2026 Tour du Rwanda route was officially unveiled yesterday at a press conference at the Kigali Convention Centre, revealing what organizers are calling "the most demanding edition in the race's history."
The 8-stage race, scheduled for June 1-8, 2026, will cover 1,089 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 18,400 meters — the highest in the event's 16-year history.
Key highlights of the route include:
Stage 1 — Kigali Circuit (98km): A technical city circuit featuring the iconic Rebero Hill climb, where crowds traditionally gather in the thousands.
Stage 3 — Musanze Time Trial (32km): An individual time trial against the backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes, with gradients reaching 14% on the final climb to the finish.
Stage 5 — Queen Stage: Kibuye to Gisenyi (156km): The race's most demanding day, featuring three categorized climbs including the legendary "Wall of Karongi" — a 7km ascent with an average gradient of 9.2%.
Stage 7 — Nyamata to Kigali (128km): The penultimate stage includes the newly paved Bugesera circuit, offering fast, rolling terrain before the final climb to the finish at the Kigali Arena.
Race Director Aimable Bayingana expressed confidence in the route: "We've worked with the UCI to design a course that tests every aspect of a cyclist's ability. The winner of the 2026 Tour du Rwanda will truly deserve the yellow jersey."
The race has attracted 18 UCI-registered teams, including two WorldTour squads, four ProTeams, and the national teams of Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
Defending champion Moise Mugisha will lead Team Rwanda, supported by a strong domestic squad that includes Valens Ndayisenga and Jean Bosco Nsengimana.
